The Battle of Stalingrad

The Battle of Stalingrad was a major turning point in World War II. It took place from July 17, 1942, to February 2, 1943, in the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in southern Russia. The battle was fought between Nazi Germany and its allies against the Soviet Union. Stalingrad was an important industrial and transport center, and both sides suffered enormous casualties. The fighting was extremely brutal, with much of the city reduced to rubble and heavy losses among soldiers and civilians alike. Despite being nearly pushed out of the city, the Soviet army managed to surround and trap the German 6th Army in November 1942. After months of bitter fighting and shortages of supplies, the German forces surrendered in February 1943. The battle was one of the deadliest in history and marked the beginning of a series of Soviet victories that would eventually lead to Germany’s defeat.
