John James Audubon went on an expedition to the Missouri River in 1843. He wanted to create a comprehensive study of all mammals in North America. Between 1845 and 1848; with the help of his son, John W. Audubon, they were able to produce a set of stunning lithographs engraved by Philadelphia printmaker J.T. Bowen. Finished with hand color, the fine detail and character of each animal come alive in every print. The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America was completed just three years before Audubon's death.

This collection maintains the legacy as being the definitive work on North American mammals from the 19th century. While a second edition of Quadrupeds was printed in 1860, the worn down stones could not produce prints of the same quality as the originals. The Field Museum Edition Quadruped reproductions hold true to the original prints from the 1840s. There are only 300 limited edition prints of each quadruped and may not be reprinted for 75 years.
