Alan B. Shepard Jr. was an American astronaut, naval aviator, and test pilot who became the first American to travel into space in 1961 and the fifth person, as well as the oldest at age 47, to walk on the moon as commander of the Apollo 14 mission in 1971. Born November 18, 1923, in East Derry, New Hampshire, Shepard graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1944 and served aboard the destroyer USS Cogswell during World War II. He became a naval aviator in 1947, attended the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School, and was eventually chosen as one of NASA's original Mercury Seven astronauts in 1959.
